Miller (typeface)
Miller is a slab-serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter in 1997. It was commissioned by the Miller Brewing Company for use in their corporate identity and branding materials.
Characterized by its robust serifs, moderate contrast, and overall sturdy appearance, Miller was intended to project a sense of tradition and dependability. While originally designed for a specific corporate client, the typeface was later released for general licensing.
Carter aimed to create a slab-serif that felt both contemporary and rooted in historical precedents. It draws influence from nineteenth-century "Antique" or "Egyptian" typefaces but incorporates more refined details and a higher level of legibility.
Miller is available in various weights and styles, including regular, bold, italic, and condensed versions, allowing for flexibility in design applications. It has been used in a range of contexts beyond its initial corporate purpose, including book design, editorial design, and advertising.
The typeface is considered a notable example of contemporary slab-serif design and is recognized for its balance between visual impact and functional readability.
