Cama (animal)
The Cama is a hybrid animal resulting from the crossbreeding of a male dromedary camel and a female llama. The purpose of this cross is to produce an animal with the size and strength of a camel but the more cooperative temperament and higher wool production of a llama. Cama breeding is difficult and rare due to the significant size difference between the parent species and the fact that they are only distantly related. Artificial insemination is typically required.
Camas generally inherit physical characteristics from both parent species. They possess the short ears and long tail of a camel, but lack the hump. Their size is typically intermediate between that of a camel and a llama. Their temperament is reported to be more docile than a camel, making them easier to handle.
As of current knowledge, very few camas have been successfully bred. The first cama, named Rama, was born in Dubai in 1998. Camas are infertile, rendering them incapable of further reproduction. Their rarity and unique characteristics make them a subject of zoological interest.
