Unnakai

Unnakai (also spelled Unnakaya, Unakka Ada) is a spindle-shaped fritter made from plantains. It is a popular snack, particularly during festive occasions like weddings and Eid, primarily in the Malabar region of Kerala, India and also found in some parts of Karnataka.

The dish is prepared using ripe plantains, which are steamed, mashed, and then stuffed with a sweet filling. This filling typically consists of grated coconut, sugar or jaggery, cardamom powder, and sometimes nuts or raisins. The filled plantain mixture is then shaped into a spindle or cylindrical form, dipped in a batter (often made from flour and water), and deep-fried until golden brown.

Unnakai can be enjoyed both warm and at room temperature. Its texture is soft and slightly chewy, with a sweet and aromatic flavor. Variations exist in the fillings and the type of flour used for the batter, reflecting regional and family preferences.
