Interstate 290 (Massachusetts)
Interstate 290 (I-290) is a 20-mile (32 km) auxiliary Interstate Highway located entirely within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is a spur route of Interstate 90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike) serving as a major east-west connector through the city of Worcester and surrounding communities.
The western terminus of I-290 is at the interchange with the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) in Auburn. From there, it travels generally northeast through Worcester, connecting to various state routes and local roads. The eastern terminus is at Interstate 495 in Marlborough.
I-290 serves as a crucial transportation corridor for Central Massachusetts, providing access to key employment centers, educational institutions (including several colleges and universities in Worcester), and residential areas. It also facilitates travel between the Massachusetts Turnpike and Interstate 495, bypassing the more congested areas closer to Boston.
The highway is primarily four lanes wide (two lanes in each direction) for much of its length, widening to six lanes (three lanes in each direction) in some sections, particularly near Worcester. Traffic volumes on I-290 can be heavy, especially during peak commuting hours.
The routing of I-290 has undergone various improvements and modifications over the years to address traffic congestion and safety concerns. These projects have included adding lanes, upgrading interchanges, and improving signage. Despite these efforts, congestion remains a significant issue.
