Chief of General Staff (Afghanistan)

The Chief of General Staff (Afghanistan) was the highest-ranking military officer in the Afghan National Army (ANA). This position was responsible for the overall command, control, and administration of the armed forces, reporting to the Minister of Defense. The Chief of General Staff acted as the principal military advisor to the Minister of Defense and the President of Afghanistan.

Key responsibilities included developing and implementing military strategy, overseeing training and operations, managing personnel and resources, and coordinating with international partners. The Chief of General Staff played a crucial role in the effort to build a capable and professional Afghan military force.

The position ceased to exist following the collapse of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the takeover by the Taliban in August 2021.
