Ara Celi
Ara Celi is a historical site and former Franciscan mission located in the municipality of Tierradentro, Cauca, Colombia. It is part of the Tierradentro Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its unique pre-Columbian hypogea (underground tombs).
The mission was established during the colonial period with the aim of converting the indigenous Paez people to Christianity. While the original church structure no longer exists, remnants of the mission, including foundational elements and historical markers, can still be observed. The site holds historical significance due to its role in the Spanish colonization of the region and the cultural interaction between the colonizers and the indigenous population.
Today, Ara Celi serves as an important point of interest within the Tierradentro Archaeological Park. Visitors exploring the hypogea often include Ara Celi in their itinerary to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the region's history and the colonial influence on the pre-Columbian culture. The site contributes to the understanding of the broader cultural landscape of Tierradentro and its significance to Colombian history.
