Dolichi
Dolichi refers to the dolichocephalic index, a measurement used in anthropometry, specifically physical anthropology and craniometry. The term "dolichi" itself is derived from the Greek word dolichos meaning "long." It is used to describe a head shape that is long relative to its width.
The dolichocephalic index is calculated by dividing the maximum cranial breadth (width) by the maximum cranial length and multiplying the result by 100.
- Formula: (Cranial Breadth / Cranial Length) * 100
Individuals with a dolichocephalic index of less than 75 are generally considered to have a long and narrow head shape, thus being classified as dolichocephalic. Conversely, individuals with an index greater than 80 are classified as brachycephalic (broad-headed), and those between 75 and 80 are classified as mesocephalic (medium-headed).
Historically, the dolichocephalic index, along with other anthropometric measurements, was used in attempts to classify and categorize human populations. However, the scientific validity and ethical implications of these practices have been widely criticized. Modern usage of the index is primarily found in medical contexts (e.g., assessing head shape abnormalities in infants) and historical research. It is important to note that head shape is a complex trait influenced by genetics and environmental factors, and using it as a sole basis for racial or ethnic classification is inaccurate and inappropriate.
