Life Line (Star Trek: Voyager)
"Life Line" is the 153rd episode of the Star Trek: Voyager television series, the 24th episode of the sixth season. It first aired in 2000.
The episode focuses on the Doctor (Robert Picardo) receiving a holographic message from his creator, Dr. Lewis Zimmerman (also played by Robert Picardo). Zimmerman, the creator of the EMH program, is suffering from a rare and potentially fatal disease and requests the Doctor's assistance in diagnosing and curing him.
Voyager travels to the Alpha Quadrant to reach Jupiter Station where Zimmerman is located. The Doctor, in turn, uses a mobile emitter to exist and operate outside the holodeck. The episode explores the complex relationship between creator and creation, as well as the Doctor's increasing sense of self and independence.
The plot involves attempts to treat Zimmerman's illness, interpersonal conflicts between the Doctor and his creator (who has difficulty accepting the Doctor's evolved personality and capabilities), and the ethical considerations surrounding medical intervention and experimentation. Ultimately, the Doctor is able to diagnose Zimmerman's condition and provide a treatment plan.
