Kurichiya
The Kurichiya are a tribal community found predominantly in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. They are considered a Scheduled Tribe and are one of the most prominent tribal groups in the region. Historically, the Kurichiya were landowners and agriculturalists, known for their expertise in traditional farming practices, particularly rice cultivation. They adhere to a matrilineal system of inheritance and social organization, where descent is traced through the female line.
Their traditional social structure is organized around clans (illams) and villages, each with its own headman or leader. They have a rich cultural heritage characterized by unique customs, rituals, and art forms, including traditional music and dance. Their language is a dialect of Malayalam, the primary language of Kerala. While many Kurichiya have adopted modern lifestyles, they continue to preserve aspects of their traditional culture and identity. They face challenges common to many tribal communities, including access to education, healthcare, and land rights.
