John Gardner (Rhode Island governor)

John Gardner (1747-1808) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 9th Governor of Rhode Island. He was born in Newport, Rhode Island. Gardner was a prominent figure in Rhode Island politics during a period of significant transition, navigating the state's initial reluctance towards the United States Constitution.

Gardner held various public offices before becoming governor, including serving as a member of the Rhode Island General Assembly and as Attorney General of Rhode Island. He was elected governor in 1800 and served until his death in 1805.

His tenure as governor was marked by efforts to strengthen the state's economy and infrastructure. He advocated for improvements to Rhode Island's ports and supported measures to promote trade.
