M-46 (Michigan highway)

M-46, also known as the Saginaw Trail, is an east–west state trunkline highway in the U.S. state of Michigan. It traverses the central portion of the Lower Peninsula, connecting the Saginaw Valley with the western side of the state near Lake Michigan.

The highway spans approximately 155 miles (249 km), beginning at US 31 near Muskegon and ending at US 23 in Saginaw. M-46 passes through or near several cities and towns, including Muskegon, Howard City, Alma, and Saginaw.

The route primarily travels through rural agricultural areas, with sections also running through forested landscapes. It intersects with several major highways, including US 131, US 127, and I-75, facilitating travel across the region.

The designation of M-46 dates back to the early days of Michigan's state highway system. While specific dates of initial construction and designation may vary along different sections, the route has served as a significant east-west transportation corridor for many years. Minor realignments and improvements have occurred over time to enhance safety and efficiency.
