OpenFeint
OpenFeint was a social gaming network platform for mobile games, primarily focused on iOS and Android. It provided a suite of services that allowed developers to integrate social features into their games, such as leaderboards, achievements, friend lists, challenges, and user profiles. These features aimed to increase player engagement and retention by fostering a sense of community and competition among players.
Launched in 2009, OpenFeint quickly gained popularity among independent mobile game developers due to its ease of integration and comprehensive feature set. It offered a free software development kit (SDK) that simplified the process of adding social networking functionality to games.
OpenFeint was acquired by GREE, Inc. in 2011. Following the acquisition, GREE transitioned away from OpenFeint in favor of its own platform. OpenFeint services were officially discontinued on December 14, 2012. Consequently, games relying on OpenFeint lost their social features. While OpenFeint is no longer operational, it played a significant role in the early development of mobile social gaming and paved the way for subsequent platforms and services that continue to shape the mobile gaming landscape.
