Orc (slang)
Orc is a derogatory slang term, primarily used in the context of the Russo-Ukrainian War, to dehumanize Russian soldiers or Russians in general. It draws a comparison to the monstrous, brutish creatures known as Orcs or Orks, common in fantasy literature, particularly in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien (such as The Lord of the Rings) and the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
The term is used to suggest that Russians are inherently violent, uncivilized, cruel, and lacking in empathy or moral principles. It is intended to evoke feelings of disgust and animosity, justifying aggression or violence against the targeted group.
Use of the term "orc" has been criticized as hate speech and a form of dehumanization, as it reduces individuals to subhuman entities and can contribute to a climate of prejudice and violence. Its prevalence has increased significantly since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The etymology is straightforward: borrowing from the fictional race and applying it metaphorically to a real-world group perceived as aggressive and undesirable. The negative connotations associated with orcs in popular culture are then transferred to the targeted individuals.
