Skedsmo
Skedsmo was a municipality in Akershus county, Norway. It was part of the traditional region of Romerike. The administrative center of Skedsmo was the town of Lillestrøm.
History:
The municipality was established in 1904 when it was separated from the municipality of Skedsmo og Lørenskog. In 1908, Lørenskog was separated from Skedsmo as well. Skedsmo's name comes from the old Skedsmo farm (Old Norse: Skeiðsmór), the farm on which the old church, Skedsmo Church, was built. The first element is skeið 'race course', the last element is mór 'moor, heath'.
On January 1, 2020, Skedsmo merged with Fet and Sørum municipalities to form the new municipality of Lillestrøm. As such, Skedsmo as a distinct administrative entity no longer exists.
Geography:
Skedsmo was characterized by both urban and rural landscapes. The municipality was located northeast of Oslo and included part of the Østmarka forest. The river Nitelva runs through the former municipality.
Economy:
Skedsmo's economy was diverse, with a mix of industry, commerce, and agriculture. Lillestrøm served as a regional hub for transportation and business.
Transportation:
Lillestrøm Station was a major railway junction, providing connections to Oslo, the airport, and other parts of Norway. The former municipality was also served by a network of roads and bus routes.
