Ralphie (satellite)
Ralphie is a student-designed and built CubeSat at Arizona State University (ASU), specifically from the School of Earth and Space Exploration (SESE). Its primary mission is to demonstrate and validate technologies for future deep-space exploration missions. The name "Ralphie" is a reference to the Roadrunner, the mascot of ASU.
Specifically, Ralphie is designed to test a new type of antenna deployment mechanism intended for use in future small satellite missions requiring high-bandwidth communication. The satellite also incorporates a system for precisely measuring its attitude (orientation in space) using a combination of sensors. This attitude determination system is crucial for ensuring the antenna is pointed accurately toward Earth for optimal data transmission.
Ralphie represents a significant hands-on learning experience for ASU students involved in all aspects of the project, from design and construction to testing and mission operations. The data gathered during Ralphie's mission will be invaluable in refining the design of future space-bound hardware and software systems. The project also serves as a demonstration of the capabilities of student-led initiatives in contributing to space technology advancement.
