Sid Going
Sidney Milton "Sid" Going (born August 19, 1943) is a former New Zealand rugby union player, considered one of the greatest halfbacks in the history of the sport. He played for North Auckland and the All Blacks from 1967 to 1977.
Going was renowned for his speed, agility, and tactical brilliance. His ability to break from the scrum and distribute the ball quickly and accurately made him a constant threat to opposing defenses. He was also a strong defender and a fierce competitor.
Going played 86 matches for the All Blacks, including 29 test matches. He captained the All Blacks in four tests. He was a key member of the All Blacks teams that toured Britain in 1967, South Africa in 1970, and the British and Irish Lions in 1971. He was also a member of the All Blacks team that won the Grand Slam in 1978 (though he did not play in all matches due to retirement earlier that year).
Beyond his on-field prowess, Going was also known for his strong religious beliefs. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission in Canada before resuming his rugby career. His faith was a significant part of his life and was often mentioned in media coverage of him.
Following his rugby career, Going remained involved in the sport as a coach and administrator. He has been inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame. He is widely remembered as an iconic figure in New Zealand rugby and a player who significantly influenced the halfback position.
