Defcon 5 (1995 video game)
Defcon 5, also known as Threat Condition, is a full motion video (FMV) interactive movie game released in 1995. Developed by Apogee Software and published by MicroVision, it was released for the MS-DOS operating system.
The game puts the player in the role of a newly assigned security officer aboard the space station Eris, orbiting Earth. A distress call from the Eris indicates a problem of potentially catastrophic proportions. The player's goal is to investigate the cause of the distress call, prevent the activation of the Defcon 5 protocol (the self-destruction of the station), and uncover a deeper conspiracy.
Gameplay consists primarily of watching FMV sequences and making dialogue choices at critical junctures. These choices influence the narrative and ultimately determine the game's outcome, which can result in one of several different endings. The game featured multiple actors and sets, attempting to create a cinematic experience.
The game received mixed reviews upon release. While some praised its use of FMV technology for immersive storytelling, others criticized its acting, plot, and limited interactivity.
