HMCS Quinte (J166)
HMCS Quinte (J166) was a Bangor-class minesweeper that served in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. Named for the Bay of Quinte in Ontario, she was commissioned on November 20, 1941, in Port Arthur, Ontario.
During the war, HMCS Quinte primarily served as an escort vessel, protecting convoys in the Western Atlantic and later in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. She was involved in several convoy escort duties, helping to safeguard merchant ships from enemy submarine attacks. Her duties also included anti-submarine patrols and general coastal defence.
Following the cessation of hostilities, HMCS Quinte was paid off on October 26, 1945, and subsequently sold into mercantile service. Her later fate is not widely documented.
Bangor-class minesweepers were designed for coastal defence and minesweeping duties. They were relatively small but capable vessels, crucial for maintaining safe shipping lanes during the war. HMCS Quinte represents one of the many Canadian naval vessels that played a vital role in the Allied war effort.
