SS Heliopolis (1907)

The SS Heliopolis was a passenger steamship built in 1907 by Armstrong Whitworth & Co. Ltd. in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. She was one of a pair of sister ships, the other being the SS Cairo, built for the Khedivial Mail Steamship & Graving Dock Co. of Egypt. The Heliopolis and Cairo were primarily deployed on routes connecting Egypt with various Mediterranean ports and European cities, notably Marseilles and Brindisi, transporting passengers, mail, and cargo.

During World War I, the Heliopolis was requisitioned by the British Admiralty and converted into a hospital ship. She served in this capacity throughout the war, providing medical support and transportation for wounded soldiers.

After the war, the Heliopolis was returned to her owners and resumed commercial service. She continued to operate in the Mediterranean until the 1930s. Historical records indicate she was scrapped sometime around 1934-1935.

The Heliopolis represented a typical passenger liner of the early 20th century, reflecting the growing demand for international travel and trade. Her service as a hospital ship during World War I highlights the crucial role played by civilian vessels in supporting the war effort.
