Snake River (Colorado)

The Snake River is a tributary of the Dillon Reservoir in Summit County, Colorado. Rising in the high peaks of the Continental Divide near Keystone Resort, the river flows generally north and then eastward through a narrow valley before entering the western arm of Dillon Reservoir. The river is primarily fed by snowmelt and smaller creeks originating in the surrounding mountains.

The Snake River's watershed is heavily impacted by historical mining operations, particularly for silver and lead. This legacy has resulted in elevated levels of heavy metals in the river's sediment and water, affecting water quality and aquatic life. Remediation efforts have been undertaken to address these environmental issues.

The river provides recreational opportunities, including fishing (though with restrictions due to water quality), hiking along its banks, and scenic views. The town of Keystone and the Keystone Resort are located near the river's headwaters, contributing to its popularity as a tourist destination.

The Snake River should not be confused with the larger Snake River that flows through Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. They are distinct river systems, sharing only a name.
