Split Mountain (California)

Split Mountain is a prominent geological feature located in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California, United States. It is a steep-sided anticline ridge dramatically bisected by a narrow, winding canyon carved by the waters of Fish Creek. This canyon exposes layers of sedimentary rock, providing a visible record of the region's geological history.

The mountain is composed primarily of sedimentary rocks, including sandstone, mudstone, and conglomerate, deposited over millions of years in an ancient marine environment. Tectonic forces subsequently folded and uplifted these layers, forming the anticline structure. The cutting action of Fish Creek created the spectacular canyon that gives Split Mountain its name.

The narrow passage through Split Mountain is a popular hiking and driving route, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the desert landscape and observe the exposed geological formations. The canyon walls can rise hundreds of feet, creating a visually impressive experience. However, it is important to be aware of potential flash flood risks, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. Vehicles with high clearance are typically recommended for navigating the unpaved road through the canyon.
