Underrail
Underrail is a single-player, turn-based isometric role-playing game (RPG) developed and published by Stygian Software. Released in 2015, the game is set in a post-apocalyptic future where humanity lives in a vast network of underground metro stations known as the Underrail, following a cataclysmic event that rendered the surface world uninhabitable.
The game emphasizes exploration, character customization, and tactical combat. Players create their character, choosing from a variety of skills and feats that significantly impact gameplay. The setting is characterized by its grim atmosphere, political intrigue, and diverse factions, including territorial gangs, corporate interests, and shadowy government organizations.
Gameplay revolves around exploring the Underrail's interconnected tunnels and stations, scavenging for resources, completing quests, and engaging in combat with hostile creatures and other humans. Combat is turn-based and focuses on tactical positioning, resource management, and exploiting enemy weaknesses. Crafting is also a significant component, allowing players to create weapons, armor, consumables, and modifications using scavenged materials.
Underrail is known for its high difficulty, complex mechanics, and a branching narrative where player choices have meaningful consequences. The game's world is densely populated with lore and secrets, rewarding thorough exploration and careful interaction with the environment and non-player characters (NPCs). Its design choices are heavily inspired by classic isometric RPGs such as Fallout and System Shock 2.
