Banaba

Banaba is a medium-sized tree native to the Philippines and Southeast Asia, with the scientific name Lagerstroemia speciosa. It is also known by other names, including Giant Crape-myrtle, Queen's Crape-myrtle, Pride of India, and Jarul.

The tree is valued for its ornamental qualities, featuring large, showy flowers that bloom in the summer, ranging in color from lavender and pink to purple and white. Its leaves are deciduous, turning reddish-brown before falling in the autumn.

In traditional medicine, particularly in the Philippines, extracts from the banaba tree, specifically from its leaves, are used for various purposes. These include managing blood sugar levels, aiding in weight loss, and providing antioxidant benefits. These purported benefits are attributed to compounds like corosolic acid and ellagitannins present in the leaves. However, further scientific research is needed to fully validate these medicinal claims and determine appropriate dosages and potential side effects.

Banaba is also used as a source of timber, although not as extensively as some other hardwoods. Its wood is moderately hard and durable.

Cultivation of banaba trees is common in tropical and subtropical regions around the world for both ornamental and medicinal purposes. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun.
