Fundulus

Fundulus is a genus of ray-finned fishes in the family Fundulidae, commonly known as killifish. These small fish are native to North America, primarily found in fresh, brackish, and saltwater habitats along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Fundulus species are characterized by their elongated bodies, flattened heads, and upturned mouths. Their dorsal fin is located far back on their body, near the anal fin. They exhibit a wide range of coloration and patterns, often varying depending on species and habitat. Males are often more brightly colored than females, especially during breeding season.

Killifish of the genus Fundulus are generally found in shallow water environments, including marshes, estuaries, streams, and ponds. They are often tolerant of a wide range of salinity levels and can survive in areas with low oxygen concentrations.

The diet of Fundulus killifish consists mainly of small invertebrates, algae, and detritus. They play an important ecological role in their respective habitats, serving as both predators and prey.

Several species of Fundulus are popular in the aquarium trade due to their hardiness and interesting behaviors. Fundulus heteroclitus, the mummichog, is a particularly well-studied species and is often used in scientific research, particularly in studies related to environmental toxicology and developmental biology. Their abundance and ease of collection make them a valuable model organism.

Conservation status varies among Fundulus species. Some are relatively common and widespread, while others are more vulnerable due to habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species.
