Marakei
Marakei is an atoll in the Gilbert Islands group, part of the nation of Kiribati. It is located in the central Pacific Ocean, approximately 63 kilometers (39 miles) north of Tarawa.
Geography: Marakei is a roughly triangular atoll enclosing a lagoon. Unlike many atolls in Kiribati, Marakei's lagoon is predominantly freshwater, fed by rainwater and subterranean seepage. The land area is approximately 13.5 square kilometers (5.2 square miles). The surrounding reef is narrow, making access by sea challenging.
Population: The population of Marakei is dispersed across several villages located along the atoll's rim. Population numbers fluctuate, but generally remain within a range of 2500-3000 inhabitants. The main villages include Rawannawi, Tekarakan, and Temotu.
Economy: The primary economic activities on Marakei are subsistence farming, fishing, and copra production. Coconuts, pandanus, and breadfruit are important crops. Fishing provides a significant source of protein. Copra, the dried kernel of the coconut, is processed and sold for export, contributing to the island's limited cash economy.
Culture: The inhabitants of Marakei maintain a traditional Kiribati culture. Communal living and cooperation are important aspects of daily life. Traditional crafts, such as weaving and canoe building, are still practiced. Gilbertese language and customs are preserved.
Administration: Marakei is administered as part of the Gilbert Islands administrative region of Kiribati. Local governance is handled by an elected island council.
Transportation: Marakei is served by an airport (IATA code: MZK) with regular flights to and from other islands in Kiribati. Boat transportation is also important, although the narrow reef can present challenges.
