Tan Ende

Tan Ende (born January 24, 1946, in Jakarta, Indonesia; died June 19, 2014, in Jakarta, Indonesia) was an Indonesian computer scientist and academic. He was a prominent figure in the development of computer science education in Indonesia and made significant contributions to the field, particularly in the areas of data structures, algorithms, and programming languages.

Ende received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1971. He then pursued his Master's and Doctoral degrees in Computer Science from Cornell University in the United States, graduating in 1978.

Upon his return to Indonesia, Tan Ende dedicated his career to teaching and research at ITB. He played a key role in establishing and developing the Informatics Engineering Department at ITB, which has become one of the leading computer science programs in the country.

Tan Ende was known for his influential textbooks on data structures and algorithms, which were widely used by Indonesian students for decades. These books, often written in Bahasa Indonesia, helped to make computer science concepts accessible to a broader audience. His pedagogical approach emphasized clarity, rigor, and the importance of fundamental principles. He was also involved in various national initiatives aimed at improving computer literacy and promoting the use of information technology in Indonesia.

Tan Ende's contributions to computer science education in Indonesia are widely recognized, and he is remembered as a dedicated educator and a pioneer in the field.
