Our Town (2007 film)
Our Town is a 2007 American television film adaptation of Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name. Directed by James Naughton, it features a performance of the play captured live on stage at the Westport Country Playhouse in Westport, Connecticut.
The film aims to recreate the experience of watching a live theatrical performance, preserving the minimalist staging and meta-theatrical elements characteristic of Wilder's original work. Paul Newman, in his final theatrical role, stars as the Stage Manager, the play's narrator and guide. Jane Curtin plays Mrs. Gibbs and Jeffrey DeMunn portrays Mr. Webb.
The story unfolds in the fictional town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, between 1901 and 1913. It follows the lives of the Webb and Gibbs families, focusing on the courtship and marriage of George Gibbs and Emily Webb, and exploring themes of everyday life, love, death, and the passage of time.
The film received positive reviews, particularly for Newman's performance and its faithfulness to the source material. It aired on PBS as part of their Masterpiece Theatre series, bringing Wilder's classic play to a wider audience. The film offers a direct and intimate viewing experience of the play, retaining its emotional impact and philosophical reflections on the human condition.
