Magnificent Obsession (album)
Magnificent Obsession is the debut studio album by the English band the Colourfield. It was released in 1985 on Chrysalis Records. The album is notable for its sophisticated pop arrangements and use of jazz and bossa nova influences, setting it apart from the prevalent synth-pop sounds of the era.
The album spawned several singles, including "Thinking of You," which achieved moderate chart success. Magnificent Obsession showcases the songwriting of Terry Hall (formerly of The Specials and Fun Boy Three) and features contributions from various session musicians.
Musically, the album blends elements of new wave, jazz, and Latin music, creating a unique and atmospheric sound. Lyrically, Magnificent Obsession explores themes of love, longing, and social commentary, often presented with a melancholic and introspective tone.
While not a massive commercial success upon its initial release, Magnificent Obsession has gained a cult following over the years and is now considered a significant album of the mid-1980s alternative pop scene. It is regarded as a demonstration of Terry Hall’s evolving musical direction and a departure from his earlier ska and new wave work. Subsequent re-releases have included bonus tracks and expanded editions.
