French Hospital (Manhattan)
The French Hospital in Manhattan, officially known as the French Hospital for Women and Children, was a hospital located in New York City. Founded in 1881, it primarily served the French-speaking community of New York. Over the years, it expanded its services to include a broader patient base while maintaining a connection to its French heritage.
The hospital was located at 450 West 34th Street for a significant portion of its history. It provided a range of medical services, including general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics, and pediatrics. Notably, it was a teaching hospital, affiliated with various medical schools.
In 1978, the French Hospital merged with Polyclinic Hospital to form the French and Polyclinic Health Center. This merger aimed to consolidate resources and improve healthcare delivery in the area. The combined institution continued to operate for several years.
However, in 1991, the French and Polyclinic Health Center declared bankruptcy and subsequently closed. The facilities were later acquired and repurposed. The French Hospital, as a distinct entity, no longer exists, but its legacy remains as a significant part of New York City's medical history and its contribution to serving the French-American community.
