Freculf

Freculf (also spelled Fredulf) was a Frankish Benedictine monk and bishop of Lisieux during the Carolingian period. He is best known for his comprehensive world history, Historiarum Libri XII, also known as Chronicon.

Born around 760 AD, Freculf entered the monastery of Flavigny in Burgundy. He was later appointed bishop of Lisieux around 824, a position he held until his death in 852.

Freculf's Historiarum Libri XII is a significant historical work. Divided into twelve books, it presents a history of the world from creation to the reign of Louis the Pious, focusing on both secular and ecclesiastical events. The work relies heavily on earlier historians like Eusebius, Jerome, Orosius, and Gregory of Tours, but also includes unique information not found elsewhere. Freculf attempted to provide a universal history, showing the progression of divine purpose through human events. His work was influential during the Carolingian Renaissance and served as a valuable source for later historians. The Chronicon showcases Freculf's erudition and his understanding of classical and patristic learning.
