City (band)
City was an East German rock band founded in East Berlin in 1972, originally under the name Kombination. Their style blended elements of hard rock, progressive rock, and folk music, incorporating violin and other instruments not typically found in conventional rock lineups.
The band's breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of their song "Am Fenster" ("At the Window"), a ballad featuring a prominent violin melody and emotionally resonant lyrics. "Am Fenster" became a massive hit, not only in East Germany but also in West Germany and other European countries. It remains their best-known song and a classic of German rock music.
Following the success of "Am Fenster," City continued to record and tour, releasing several albums throughout the 1980s. Despite the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent reunification of Germany, the band remained active, adapting to the changing music landscape.
Over the years, City experienced various lineup changes, but the core members maintained the band's distinctive sound. They continued to tour and perform their classic hits, as well as new material, until their final concert in December 2022. City is considered one of the most important and influential rock bands to emerge from East Germany. Their music continues to be enjoyed by audiences across generations.
