Keikyä

Keikyä was a municipality in southwestern Finland, located in the Satakunta region. It bordered the municipalities of Kokemäki, Huittinen, Köyliö, and Säkylä.

History: Keikyä was first mentioned in historical records in 1480. It was an independent municipality until January 1, 2009, when it merged with Kiikka to form the new municipality of Sastamala. Prior to this, there were earlier discussions about a merger with Huittinen, but these plans did not materialize.

Geography: Keikyä covered an area of 171.55 square kilometers (66.24 sq mi), of which 4.25 km2 (1.64 sq mi) was water. The landscape is generally flat, characteristic of the Satakunta region. The river Kokemäenjoki flows through the area.

Population: Before the merger, the population of Keikyä was approximately 1,750 inhabitants. The population density was approximately 10.4 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Economy: Agriculture and forestry were historically significant industries in Keikyä.

Culture: Keikyä had a local history museum and a church, both providing insight into the area's cultural heritage. The local dialect also contributed to the distinct identity of the area.
