Gary Silk

Gary Silk (born 1963, date of death unknown) was a Victorian Police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on August 16, 1998, in Cochranes Road, Moorabbin, Victoria, Australia. He, along with Sergeant Rodney Miller, were ambushed and killed while investigating a robbery at a Silky Emperor restaurant. The murders became one of the most prominent and intensely investigated cases in Victorian criminal history.

The investigation, known as Operation Lorimer, involved thousands of police officers and became the longest-running homicide investigation in Victoria. A key witness, Wendy Peirce, the wife of career criminal Victor Peirce, initially implicated Bandali Debs and Jason Roberts in the murders.

Jason Roberts was initially convicted of the murders, but the conviction was later overturned, and he was acquitted in a retrial in 2023. Bandali Debs remains convicted of the murders of both Silk and Miller.

The Silk-Miller murders remain a significant and controversial case in Australian legal history, marked by allegations of police corruption, witness tampering, and flawed evidence. The case continues to be subject to public scrutiny and legal debate. The case also led to significant changes in Victorian policing procedures and forensic investigation techniques.
