1937 Richmond (Surrey) by-election

The 1937 Richmond (Surrey) by-election was a parliamentary by-election held on 26 February 1937 for the British House of Commons constituency of Richmond in Surrey.

The seat became vacant when Sir Robert Hamilton of the Liberal Party resigned due to ill health.

The candidates were:

  • George Hardie Benson, representing the Labour Party
  • Edwin Charles Thompson, representing the Liberal Party
  • Sir Murdoch McKenzie Wood, representing the National Government (Conservative).

Sir Murdoch McKenzie Wood won the election with a majority of 15,900 votes over Benson. This represented a gain for the National Government from the Liberal party. The result was as follows:

  • Sir Murdoch McKenzie Wood (National Government) - 28,689
  • George Hardie Benson (Labour) - 12,789
  • Edwin Charles Thompson (Liberal) - 3,700

The by-election result indicated a decline in support for the Liberal Party. Subsequent to this by-election, Wood continued to represent Richmond (Surrey) until 1950. Benson went on to be elected as the Member of Parliament for Chesterfield later in 1937.
