Sympiesis

Sympiesis is a rhetorical device, a figure of speech, in which the same word or phrase is used at the beginning of successive clauses, phrases, or sentences, and another different word or phrase is used at the end. It combines anaphora (repetition at the beginning) and epistrophe (repetition at the end). It is used for emphasis, rhythm, and to create a memorable effect. The repetition both anchors the ideas and highlights the contrast introduced between them. Sympiesis is less common than either anaphora or epistrophe used independently.
