1900 U.S. Open (golf)

The 1900 U.S. Open was the sixth U.S. Open, held June 14, 1900, at the Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois. Harry Vardon won his only U.S. Open title, finishing at 313 and two strokes ahead of runner-up John H. Taylor.

The tournament consisted of 36 holes played on a single day. The Chicago Golf Club course played to a par of 82 for each of the two rounds, meaning the overall par for the tournament was 164.

Vardon and Taylor, both prominent British golfers, were on a highly publicized exhibition tour of the United States at the time, a tour that significantly boosted interest in the U.S. Open. Their participation contributed to a larger field than in previous years.

The defending champion was Willie Smith, who finished tied for 9th place.

This victory was the first U.S. Open win for a golfer born outside of the United States and marked a turning point in the event's growing international significance. The purse for the tournament was $330, with Vardon taking home $200 as the winner.
