German submarine U-108 (1940)

U-108 was a Type IXB U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. Commissioned on 24 October 1940, she was commanded throughout her career by Kapitänleutnant Klaus Scholtz.

U-108 conducted eleven war patrols in the Atlantic Ocean, sinking 25 ships for a total of 128,899 gross register tons (GRT) and damaging one other. Her patrols primarily focused on Allied convoys. Some notable sinkings included the SS Branducky, the SS Clan Macphee, and the SS Batna.

U-108 was part of the initial U-boat "wolfpack" tactic, working in coordinated groups to attack convoys. She operated extensively off the coasts of North America, particularly during "Operation Drumbeat" (Paukenschlag) in 1942, targeting unescorted shipping along the Eastern Seaboard.

Kapitänleutnant Scholtz remained in command for the entirety of the U-boat's active service. His leadership contributed to U-108's reputation as a successful, though not exceptionally decorated, U-boat.

U-108 was scuttled on 24 April 1945 in Bremen, Germany, to prevent her capture by Allied forces. Her wreck was later broken up. No lives were lost from U-108's crew during her service.
