BBÖ 82

The BBÖ 82 was a class of Austrian electric locomotives operated by the Bundesbahnen Österreich (BBÖ), the Austrian Federal Railways, between 1927 and 1938. They were used primarily for freight and passenger service on mountainous lines in western Austria, notably the Arlberg Railway. The locomotives were part of the BBÖ's initial electrification efforts following World War I and were designed to handle the challenging gradients and curves of the region.

The class consisted of a small number of locomotives, characterized by their distinctive boxcab design. Technical specifications included a power output sufficient for hauling heavy loads uphill and a top speed suitable for passenger duties. Following the Anschluss in 1938, the locomotives were reclassified by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Their later service history under the Reichsbahn and subsequent ownership by the post-war Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) involved further renumbering and eventual retirement. The BBÖ 82 class played a significant, albeit relatively short-lived, role in the early electrification of the Austrian railway network.
