Nyhamna
Nyhamna is an industrial site located on the island of Gossa in Aukra Municipality, Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It serves as a major natural gas processing plant and export terminal for gas extracted from the Ormen Lange gas field in the Norwegian Sea.
Overview:
Nyhamna is strategically important to Norway's natural gas infrastructure. The raw gas from Ormen Lange is transported via a 120-kilometer (75 mi) subsea pipeline to the plant. At Nyhamna, the gas is processed to meet export specifications before being transported via the Langeled pipeline, one of the longest subsea pipelines in the world, to Easington, England.
History:
The development of Nyhamna was a significant undertaking, representing a major investment in Norwegian natural gas infrastructure. The plant was initially built to process gas solely from the Ormen Lange field. However, subsequent expansions and upgrades have been undertaken to connect other fields and potentially handle future gas flows.
Operations:
The plant’s operations involve separating water, condensates, and other impurities from the raw gas stream. The processed gas is then compressed for transport through the Langeled pipeline. Safety and environmental considerations are paramount in the operation of Nyhamna, with stringent measures in place to prevent accidents and minimize environmental impact.
Economic Significance:
Nyhamna plays a vital role in the Norwegian economy, contributing significantly to the country's export revenue and employment in the region. The plant's operation supports numerous jobs directly and indirectly in Aukra municipality and beyond.
Future Development:
Ongoing and future developments at Nyhamna aim to increase its capacity, improve efficiency, and potentially connect additional gas fields to the facility. This reflects the continued importance of Nyhamna as a key hub for Norwegian natural gas exports to Europe.
