John Collins (jazz guitarist)
John Collins (September 20, 1913 – October 4, 2001) was an American jazz guitarist.
Collins is best known for his long association with pianist Nat King Cole. He played rhythm guitar in the Nat King Cole Trio from 1951 to 1964, replacing Oscar Moore. His steady, reliable playing provided a crucial foundation for Cole's distinctive sound during this period.
Prior to joining Cole, Collins worked with a variety of other musicians, including Art Tatum, Slam Stewart, and Erroll Garner. After leaving the Nat King Cole Trio due to health problems (emphysema), he continued to perform and teach guitar. He also developed a unique single-string picking technique, influenced by Charlie Christian, which he taught to many students.
While Collins was not a prolific solo artist, his contributions to jazz, particularly his rhythm guitar work and teaching, are significant. He left a lasting impact on numerous guitarists and is remembered as a highly respected and supportive musician.
