South Atlantic League (1904–1963)

The South Atlantic League, also known as the Sally League, was a Minor League Baseball league that operated from 1904 to 1963. The league's teams were primarily located in the Southeastern United States. During its existence, the league experienced numerous changes in franchise locations and affiliations with Major League Baseball teams. It was considered a Class D league at its inception, later rising to Class A classification. Notable cities that hosted teams included Charleston, South Carolina; Columbia, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Jacksonville, Florida; Augusta, Georgia; and Macon, Georgia. The league served as a developmental ground for numerous players who went on to have successful Major League careers. The South Atlantic League folded after the 1963 season, and its name was later revived by a new league in 1980, which continues to operate today, though it is a different entity with no direct connection to the earlier league beyond the name.
