Selimitsa

Selimitsa is a historical village located in the Vermio Mountains of Macedonia, Greece. It is situated within the regional unit of Imathia and is part of the municipality of Naoussa.

Historically, Selimitsa was primarily populated by Vlachs, a Balkan ethnic group speaking an Eastern Romance language related to Romanian. The inhabitants were traditionally involved in livestock breeding, agriculture, and seasonal migration, reflecting the semi-nomadic lifestyle common among many Vlach communities.

During the Ottoman period, Selimitsa, like many other villages in the region, experienced varying degrees of autonomy and interaction with Ottoman authorities. The village participated in various uprisings and resistance movements, particularly during the Greek War of Independence in the early 19th century and later struggles for Macedonian autonomy.

Following the Balkan Wars in the early 20th century, Selimitsa became part of Greece. In subsequent years, the village experienced population changes, including the integration of Greek refugees from other regions. The traditional Vlach culture and language, however, remained a significant part of the local identity for many generations.

Today, Selimitsa is a smaller settlement compared to its historical peak, but it retains elements of its traditional architecture and cultural heritage. The area is known for its natural beauty, including forests and mountainous landscapes. Efforts are underway to preserve and promote the village's history and cultural significance.
