Main Building (University of Texas at Austin)

The Main Building is the central administration building of the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). It is one of the most recognizable landmarks on the UT Austin campus, and its iconic tower dominates the Austin skyline.

The building houses the university's administrative offices, including the offices of the President and other senior administrators. While originally housing the university library, those collections have since been moved to other dedicated library buildings.

The current Main Building is not the first on the site. The original Main Building, also a Victorian-Gothic structure, was completed in 1883 but deemed structurally unsound by the early 20th century. It was razed in the 1930s to make way for the present structure.

The tower of the Main Building is a prominent feature, and is illuminated with orange lights to celebrate UT victories and other university achievements. The observation deck at the top of the tower offers panoramic views of the campus and the city of Austin.

The building's architectural style is predominantly Beaux-Arts, and it features limestone cladding and intricate detailing. The Main Building remains a symbol of the University of Texas at Austin and a vital part of its administrative functions.
