National Democratic Party (Gold Coast)

The National Democratic Party (NDP) was a political party active in the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana) during the late 1960s. It emerged in the period leading up to the 1969 general election, which was organized following the overthrow of Kwame Nkrumah's Convention People's Party (CPP) government in 1966. The NDP was one of several parties that formed during this period as Ghana transitioned towards a civilian government under the Second Republic.

The NDP’s platform and leadership were generally considered to be ideologically centrist, positioning itself as an alternative to both the CPP and the more conservative parties that were emerging. It sought to appeal to a broad base of voters. Key figures associated with the party included prominent lawyers and intellectuals of the time.

While the NDP participated in the 1969 election, its performance was not particularly strong. It failed to gain a significant number of seats in the National Assembly. The election was dominated by the Progress Party led by Kofi Abrefa Busia.

Following the election, the NDP played a relatively minor role in the political landscape of the Second Republic. Its influence diminished, and it was eventually dissolved or became politically inactive after the military coup led by Ignatius Kutu Acheampong in 1972, which ended the Second Republic and banned all political parties. Historical records regarding the NDP are limited, and its legacy is often overshadowed by the more prominent parties of the era.
