VMA-143
VMA-143, formally Marine Attack Squadron 143, was a United States Marine Corps attack squadron consisting of AV-8B Harrier II (V/STOL) jets. The squadron was based at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina and fell under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 14 (MAG-14) and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (2nd MAW).
History
Activated in 1962, VMA-143 initially flew the A-4 Skyhawk. Over the decades, the squadron transitioned to various models of the AV-8B Harrier II. VMA-143 participated in numerous operations and exercises throughout its history, deploying both aboard amphibious assault ships and to land-based locations worldwide. These deployments supported a wide range of missions, including close air support, reconnaissance, and offensive air operations.
Deactivation
VMA-143 was deactivated in March 2020 as part of the Marine Corps' force restructuring efforts. The deactivation was part of a larger plan to modernize the Marine Corps aviation and ground forces, transitioning resources to newer technologies and capabilities.
