Astra 2A

Astra 2A was a geostationary communications satellite owned and operated by SES Astra, formerly known as Société Européenne des Satellites. Launched in 1998, its primary mission was to provide direct-to-home (DTH) television and radio broadcasting services across Europe, particularly targeting the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was positioned at the 28.2° East orbital slot, a key location for broadcasting to the region.

Astra 2A was part of the Astra satellite fleet that delivered hundreds of television channels and radio stations to millions of homes. It utilized Ku-band transponders to transmit signals, allowing for relatively small receiving dishes to be used by consumers.

The satellite had a designed lifespan of approximately 12-15 years. Following its eventual decommissioning and replacement by newer satellites in the Astra fleet at the same orbital position, the services it previously provided were transitioned to those newer platforms. These replacements, like Astra 2E, 2F and 2G, were designed to provide increased capacity and enhanced broadcasting capabilities.

Astra 2A contributed significantly to the growth of digital television and satellite broadcasting in Europe during its operational lifetime.
