National Security Council (Sweden)
The National Security Council (Swedish: Nationella säkerhetsrådet) is a body within the Swedish Prime Minister's Office responsible for coordinating national security policy. It serves as a forum for discussing and coordinating matters relating to Sweden's security, both internal and external.
The Council's primary role is to support the Prime Minister in leading and coordinating the government's work on national security. This includes identifying, analyzing, and addressing threats and challenges to Sweden's security, as well as developing and implementing strategies to protect the country and its interests.
The National Security Council is chaired by the Prime Minister and typically includes key ministers, such as the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Minister for Defence, the Minister for Justice, and the Minister for Finance, as well as the National Security Advisor and representatives from relevant agencies, such as the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) and the Swedish Armed Forces. The composition can vary depending on the specific issues being discussed.
The Council prepares and coordinates strategic decisions concerning national security, including responses to crises and emergencies. It also plays a key role in coordinating Sweden's international security cooperation. The National Security Advisor serves as the secretary of the Council and is responsible for preparing meetings and following up on decisions.
While the Council coordinates policy, the responsibility for implementing that policy rests with the relevant government agencies and ministries. The Council's work is confidential, reflecting the sensitive nature of the issues it deals with. The Council's existence and role are a reflection of the increasing complexity of national security challenges in the 21st century.
