Grand River (Oklahoma)

The Grand River, also known as the Neosho River, is a major tributary of the Arkansas River in the states of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The portion of the river within Oklahoma is often referred to as the Grand River to distinguish it from the Neosho River in Kansas and Arkansas.

The river flows generally southward, draining a significant portion of northeastern Oklahoma. It is dammed in several locations, forming the major reservoirs of Grand Lake o' the Cherokees (also known as Grand Lake), Lake Hudson, and Fort Gibson Lake. These lakes are important for recreation, flood control, and hydroelectric power generation.

The Grand River is a significant source of water for agriculture, industry, and municipal use in northeastern Oklahoma. Its watershed includes diverse landscapes, ranging from prairie to forested hills. The river is also home to a variety of fish and wildlife species, although its ecosystem has been impacted by dam construction and agricultural runoff. The Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) manages the hydroelectric facilities and recreational areas associated with the lakes along the river.
