Kufra
Kufra is an oasis group located in the Kufra District of southeastern Libya. It is geographically isolated, situated in the Libyan Desert. The name "Kufra" can refer to the entire oasis region or to its main settlement, also sometimes called Kufra.
The Kufra oasis is composed of several villages, including Al Jawf (the district capital), Al Wady, Al Zubayrah, and others. These villages are sustained by groundwater from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, which allows for agriculture, primarily date palms.
Historically, Kufra was an important center for the Senussi Order, a Muslim political-religious order, from the mid-19th century. Its remoteness provided a degree of security for the Senussi during periods of conflict. It later played a strategic role during World War II.
The population of Kufra is largely Arab, with a history intertwined with trans-Saharan trade and nomadic cultures. The area's economy continues to be based on agriculture and some government services. Access to Kufra remains challenging due to its location and the desert environment.
