Carl Säve

Carl Säve (1812-1876) was a Swedish lawyer, linguist, and archaeologist. He is best known for his extensive work documenting and preserving the Gutnish language and culture of the island of Gotland. Säve was a pioneering figure in Swedish folklore studies and ethnography.

Born in Romakloster on Gotland, Säve studied law at Uppsala University, graduating in 1833. However, his passion lay in the study of the history and culture of his native island. He dedicated much of his life to collecting and documenting Gutnish dialects, traditions, and folklore.

Säve's most significant contribution was his compilation of the Gutamåls Ordbok, a Gutnish-Swedish dictionary. This work, published posthumously, remains a crucial resource for understanding and preserving the Gutnish language. He also collected and published numerous Gutnish folktales, songs, and proverbs, providing invaluable insights into the island's cultural heritage.

In addition to his linguistic work, Säve also conducted archaeological investigations on Gotland, contributing to our understanding of the island's prehistoric and medieval past. He was a member of several learned societies and received recognition for his contributions to Swedish scholarship. His dedication to preserving the unique culture of Gotland made him a revered figure in the island's history.
